2 Peter 1:3-4:- “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”

2 common things in these 2 verses

His divine power has given us

he has given us

Everything we have is from God

James 1:17. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.

What all He gave us:-

1 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life

2 he has given us his very great and precious promises

God has a specific goal: Partakers or participants of His divine nature

Though God has given us His blessings for a great purpose, unfortunately we have only very minimum goals ie Let everything be ok here and a birth in heaven!

His provisions are with a Purpose

Provisions are:-

1) vs 3. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life

Life and Godliness are Not two compartments, not 6 days ‘life’ and one day for ‘godliness’

What is Divine power? It is the power of the resurrection shared to us through Holy Spirit

“You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”

Romans 8:9 NIV

2) Precious and Magnificent Promises Vs 1:4 :Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises..

We are more interested to claim promises for earthly things!

Eph 1:3:- “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”

God has a goal for HIS word, His Blessings and His promises

Peter says that is for partaking His nature

We were created in in the image of God, but sin made us in the nature of Adam.

But God gave His only begotten son Jesus and through His life and blood

He redeemed us and wants to transform us in to the image of His Son.

Journey with a goal:– Christian life is a journey with very specific goal

If we travel without a goal or destination, we are just wasting our precious time.

The journey is not always comfortable, we have to face lot of challenges, but the joyful part is it takes us to a destination.

Our problem is we always focus on the journey and its comfort, not on our goal, results is tension, competition, frustration etc.

If the journey becomes our goal, it is a very sad situation

Words of Jesus about Last Days:- Luke 17:26-28: ““Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.”

Activities:- Eating, drinking, marrying, buying, selling, planting and building

Nothing wrong in it. Then what was wrong?

a Forgot their calling and election

Pre occupied with the day today life and ignored the eternal values

1 Pet 2:9:- “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

b Forgot their goal by focusing on the journey

Eg. Journey of Israel from Egypt to Promised Land

Basically two promises were given

I will deliver you from Egypt

I will take you to the land of to the land of Milk and honey.

First part was excellent and excited

Crossing Red Sea, destruction of enemy, Manna, kada, pillar of cloud and fire

When they faced challenges, they forgot God who fulfilled the first part is faithful to accomplish the second part of the promise.

Result is unbelief, doubts and dissatisfaction finally majority did not reach the destination.

Out of 12 spies, 10, the majority said, promised land is good, but we cannot go there!

Promise is excellent, partakes of divine nature, but after we are humans, impossible.

Only two ( Joshua and Caleb) have focused on the goal and said possible.

Paul warns us 1 Cori 10:11. Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

What is the advice for us: Challenges or difficulties should never hinder us from reaching the the goal, part of the process

According to Paul: God causes everything for our good to reach the goal.

Romans 8:28 Those who love God and called according to His divine purpose or goal, He causes everything for good.

It doesn’t say if current job is lost, higher salary job will come,

But this verse connected with vs 29:-

That goal is identifying with the image or character of His Son

That is what Peter says , part takers of His divine nature

Behaviour Vs Nature or Character :

Behaviour can be developed through training

Even govt. employees are promoted on performance basis.

Eg. Companies and Banks train people to how to behave well before customers. Even though they come after a big fight with their spouse, they behave well before others, but inside lot of anger and frustration

Eg 2. Even they fight each other in home, they behave well in church, fearing bad testimony

But the nature or character comes from inward. For that you need the help of HS

2 Cor. 3:18: ..And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

It is the work of HS

Some say, my character cannot be changed, I got it from my father and grand father!

Solution: accept the Lordship of HS and submit to His authority

Eg. An artist can make a piece of stone into a great art, if it submit to his authority. He can drill, shape and cut whenever he wants. That is perfect submission.

God has a purpose in allowing struggles in our life.

Every test is for a promotion

James 1:12.Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which [the Lord] promised to them that love him.

Religion say it is your fate

James 1:3. Test of our faith

How can we test our faith, not through a questionnaire, but through trials.

Blessed is the man who endures trials

Always 2 options before us

  1. Pray Lord get me out of this struggles

We say sometimes, no one has these type of challenges like me, NO.

Some say If this current problem is over, I will be available for God, NO, one after another will come.

  1. Or pray as Jesus prayed in John 12: 28. (Let your name be glorified) What should we do to reach that goal?“.

ii) 2 Peter 1:4 escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.

Evil desires bring corruption of decay everywhere including churches, family, immortality, jealousy, competition

The self or flesh has to die

John 12:24. Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit.

A grain of wheat is kept in a beautiful jar, it will stay there for years, but falls in to ground and die, it will produce result.

2 Timothy 2:11:-Faithful is the saying: For if we died with him, we shall also live with him:

If self is on cross, Christ will be on the throne of your heart

If Self is on the throne, Christ will be on the cross.

ii) 2 Peter 1: 5-8:- “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

8 tips for reaching the goal : partaking His divine nature:-

It is like building by putting stone upon stone.

Faith: Heb 11:6 Faith is fundamental

1) Moral Excellence to Faith : the courage to do right, regardless of the pressure or temptation to sin.

2) If Jesus appears and asks us do you need my nature or devil’s, we certainly say, I only want your nature.

Lord Jesus is asking the same question when we are about to commit a sin, what would be our answer?

Eg. Joseph

3) Knowledge :- Knowing of God and His word. Let us see the glory of our blessed Lord Jesus while we meditate the word of God.

4) Self Control 1Cor 9:25 : Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things.

Self control is fruit of Spirit.

How much discipline and effort to receive a fading crown.

Eg. Some such athletes sells their gold medal for food!

We are about to get crown hitch has eternal value!

5) Perseverance Steadfastness in adversity, never give up

Yes sometimes we feel this is too much! No, He will strengthen us.

Romans 8:38:-For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers.

6) Godliness :Seeks to please God, not ourselves , as Samuel, “ Lord you speak, your servant listens”

7) Brotherly Love : willingness to forgive

8) Love : towards God by sincere obedience, towards other men by seeking their good.

Result of Spiritual Growth

Vs 2 Peter 1:8: For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.”

Effective and Productive

Otherwise:

Else Ineffective and unproductive

Blind: Like the blind man who was partially healed, man and trees are equal to him. Unable to distinguish between temporal and eternal

Short sighted: Only seeing what is temporal

forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins:- If we always remember the pit from where God has rescued us, it will keep us humble always.

Conclusion: If we give much importance and attention for the comforts of this short life.

We will be dissatisfied and unhappy.

Rather focus on the goal of our Christian life:- partaking the divine nature of His son.

God has given us all provisions to reach this final goal

He wants to share His communicable attributes with like His Mercy, gentle, humility, unconditional love, forgiveness, rest in heart, constant trust in Father God, encouraging others, impartiality etc.

His glory should reflect through our life.

Decision is ours, without our sincere response, it will not work.

Hebrew 3:14. 14. Hold fast your confession

He has given us free will and a good conscience .He never force us.

What we are today is the result of our past decisions we took ( many of you not supposed to sit here, but you responded in your conscience to the Word of God.

The decision now we take is going to decide our tomorrow and eternity

There is only one life,

We heard about the hope of His calling about each one of us, that is partaking His divine glory.

Our focus was about the temporal things of this world.

There is no retake option for us like in video or photography

Eg. Parents doctors, built a good hospital and sent their only son to Bangalore to do MBBS, but he went astray and could not complete it and returned home after 10 years, father’s words in extreme pain- what all plans we had for you! You spoiled everything!

When we stand in His presence, He will show us His dreams and plans for our life, but you moved into another direction. So sad!

Peter says in vs 1:10-11. “Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Rich welcome , grand entrance, lavish reception in to the eternal kingdom of God, Or you just want to creep in, somehow I made it

eg. Getting into a packed bus

Let us pray Lord help me reach your goal concerning my life, let every day be a stepping stone for that divine goal.

God bless you!
